I share this book at Christmas time!

I always share this book with one or two of my grades each and every year. It is a book that many would not choose to read before Christmas. I feel it is the perfect time to share such a remarkable book. The book is called "Trupp"by Jannell Cannon. A homeless woman who helps the little creature bandage his cut foot. She wants to be seen by people and Trupp is trying to disguise himself from being seen.

Opposites due attract and it costs nothing to have a giving heart.

Applause for a wonderful Christmas story

December 16, 2013

Ho, Ho, Ho, it is that magical time of year: Christmas.

It was a pleasure to share a book called, "Mortimer's Christmas Manger" by Karma Wilson with the Grade 2 class.  The students truly enjoyed this book about a cute little mouse who finally finds a new home and is introduced to the "First Christmas." I always know I've chosen just the right book when the children applaud when I finish reading it aloud.

The best things in life are free. How fortunate I am to experience the joy and wonder in the childrens' eyes when I'm reading a good book.

Book Fair is Successful Again!

Every year in the fall the "Scholastic Book Fair" is set up in the Library. The anticipation of a book fair creates excitement in the air. All the grades seem to look forward to looking at all the new books for sale. It is a busy week indeed but the smiles on the faces make up for the lifting and carrying of boxes. I'm fortunate to always have a wonderful group of students willing to help me for the week. I would like to thank Cassie, Patricia, Rianna, Emily and Tessa. I can always count on this amazing school community to support this weekly Fair.

The Scholastic Book Fair sold more than last year. Wow! I have chosen a box of new books for the library at our discounted prices and have money set aside for "wish books".

St. Luke's families are so giving. It was so nice to meet the families again at the evening event.

  Happy reading,

Eric Walters Presentation!

Thursday, November 21, 2013
It was my pleasure to have arranged a visit from award-winning author Eric Walters. He spoke to Grade 5-8 students. I found his presentation riveting, informative, humbling and humorous. The students asked questions and enjoyed his talk and the photos of Africa that he shared.

I was grateful to have received an autographed copy of his latest book titled "My name is Blessing." Once again, he is a gifted speaker, a talented author and a caring man. Eric believes that we can all make the world a better place by giving, being considerate and kind to everyone.

Mr. Walters donated 40 books to me to create a novel kit to be shared between by two school libraries St. Luke's/St. Teresa's. I chose a complete set of 4 books to place on the shelves at each school library and the other's will be used within a classroom.
 Thank You Mr. Walters.

LION'S CLUB (Omemee and surrounding area) donating to St. Luke's once again!

I would like to acknowledge and thank the Lion's Club for their contributions to our school.  Once again, they chose our school as an important place to donate their dollars. Again, the funds will purchase books from the Forest Reading Program. Both Silver Birch Non-Fiction and Maple Fiction books were purchased November 2013. The Grade 8 class are reading the books and then they will be part of the school library collection.

Last year they donated the funds to purchase the books from the Forest Reading Program. The books were given to Mr. M's Grade 8 class and Mrs. H's Grade 5/6 class last year to enjoy. The students had the opportunity to read recent  published Canadian author books. All of these books were then placed on the shelves in the library for the middle/intermediate students to read.

How wonderful to have such a caring citizens group that always considers donating some of their funds to support our school's student literacy plans.

Grade 8's visual

The Grade 8 class enjoyed a smart-board visual presentation called Mesmerizing and Beautiful Underwater Life, where they saw amazing jelly-fish, leafy seahorse and other fish. This Youtube presentation provided written information regarding pollution, loss of species and how we must protect this beautiful underwater sanctuary. Students were asking questions about some of the ocean creatures during and after the presentation. Sometimes it only takes amazing visual photographs to encourage the students to enquire and explore more topics in science.

21st Century Library

Our library has now been accepted into the 21st Century Library for future board endeavours. I'm very pleased that I will have the opportunity to share new technology with the students and staff. Our informational highway of possibilities is changing rapidly. My goal is to have apps that will help struggling readers and children with special needs.

Virtue of the November : Peace

Dear God, please send to me the spirit of peace
for me to all the world.

PEACE
it does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise,
trouble or hard work, it means to be the midst of those things
and still be calm in your heart. (unknown)

Do you know the meerkats...?

Yesterday, I shared a non-fiction book with the Grade 3 class. I chose a book from the Nature's Children book series called Meerkats by Tim Harris. It is just the right amount of information for this particular grade level. The meerkat is a very interesting animal and the children were intrigued by them and learned a lot from this read aloud.

Here are a few facts that we learned: these animals get a babysitter for their pups when they go out (responsible parenting)! Meerkats take care of each other, and they even eat SCORPIONS. As the boys were signing out their own book choices, I asked many of them if they would like a scorpion for dinner?

Sharing a non-fiction book about an unusual animal fires up curiosity, and that was the intention of this book choice. We listened, we laughed and we shared our own stories with each other. Now when we see the meerkats at the zoo we will already know something about them.

My read aloud that was memorable this week!

I read the book called "The Night I Followed My Dog" by Nina Laden. The children made predictions about where the dog might be going. I suggested after reading the book that maybe they could write their own stories. Instead of a dog they could choose another pet, such as a cat, horse, cow or guinea pig to follow at night. This was a memorable book for me that brought laughter to the whole room. One student even thought he would like to move into the doghouse!

Make story-time fun at home. Happy Reading!

November Events

Eric Walters Presentation

It is my pleasure to be able to introduce an awarding winning Canadian author to our school. Eric Walters will be visiting St. Luke's on November 21st. He is an inspiring author of middle school/intermediate student books, has received many awards, and also founded a charity.

Thanks to our wonderful Parent Council, and specifically Mrs. Scott, who wrote and asked for a grant that we have been awarded, we are able to bring this literacy presentation to the school.

Eric will be talking to students about writing, his career as an author, and how he gets ideas for stories and characters. He will also be selling his books at the presentation, and accepting cheque donations for the Creation of Hope, an orphanage that Eric has founded and supports. This place of hope is in Kenya where beautiful children are given a home and hope for a better life.

Thank you parents of St. Luke's!

Scholastic Book Fair

Once again the "Scholastic Book Fair" is coming the week of November 25-29. It will be open Thursday, November 28 until 7:30 for parents and children to shop, which is also "Movie Night" at St. Luke's.

St. Luke's families have always supported the book fairs and it is truly appreciated. I know how much the students enjoy seeing all the new books and how the school library transforms into a store.
Thank you for shopping at St. Luke's Library!

October Library Classes

This month began with sharing a beautiful old book titled, " Paperbag Prince" by Colin Thompson. I will also be sharing books that have a story a theme of charity/giving. Grade 7-8 students will review being a "Good Digitial Citizen", it is an important lesson that must be followed.

September 9-September 10

The library has been a very busy place, with students visiting the library for the first time this year. I was very pleased to see all of their smiling faces and their anxious behavior to see what I would be sharing.

32 beautiful little JK/SK souls coming to the library for "Story-time"
I shared the book called, "Where is Clifford?" - a flip and fold book. The children were listening and looking intensely at the illustrations, trying to find Clifford. To hear laughter and awaken the children's imaginations and interest in reading was so rewarding. The moment that really made my heart shine was when one little girl was so intent on being able to read that she was 'reading' her book upside down before she left the library.

The intermediate classes were given a lesson on "Digital Citizenship." Reading different scenarios involving the use of technology and social media, the students had to decide if the action described was appropriate or inappropriate. This was a great way to engage the students with important information that they will use daily.

September, 2013--First Week!

I plan on sharing an amazing book with the children called, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore.
"The story began as a tribute to the late Bill Morris, the soft-spoken, dry-witted pioneer of library promotions. Then hurricane Katrina devasted Mr. Joyce's home state and interrupted progress on the books. The author saw firsthand the curative power of stories as he visited displaced children reading donated books in the shelters.

But the power of story will save the day" (taken from the book cover).

Welcome back!

Summer passed by very quickly and the weather was simply perfect. I hope everyone had an enjoyable time. It is my mission again this year to encourage all students to become life-long readers. With my read aloud choices, book trailers and occasional games it is my hope that everyone will look forward to their weekly visit to the library. Let’s begin …

Spelling Bees March 2013

March 2013

The library has been buzzing with Spelling Bees for Grades 4-8. The children have been practising in their classrooms and participating with on-line computer Spelling Bee games. The 3 participants who win in each grade look forward to a sweet prize. I hope it encourages the students to use on-line educational games that will help them with spelling and vocabulary, and will assist with developing their reading skills. I have included website Spelling Bees in the March Newsletter!
